Looking back on 100 years of movie history there is a huge and epochal change in the representation of nudity, eroticism and sex on the canvas. One can observe two major developments. A first spectrum ranges in the b/w silent film era from the roaring 20s, the influence of censorship in the 30s, the war years in the 40s, the conservative cold war in the 50s up to the challenges of censorship in the '60s. A second spectrum ranges in technicolor time cinema from the late 60s over the 1970s with porn chic highlight and liberalization, the 1980s with exploitation cinema and teen sex comedies, the 1990s with further inroads for sex in cinema and more softcore movies up to finally the 2000s with much more explicit nudity and sex in films. Today the border to conventional pornography has already been exceeded. And real hardcore sex on cinema screens is more and more accepted by an open-minded society.

Sex in Films Today
Sexy
and erotic images in film scenes can be displayed in many varieties
and kinds of films. Sexual scenes may appear in art-house films,
horror/slasher films, erotic dramas, foreign-language films
and mainstream films. They may be 'old-fashioned,' risque, blatant,
mature, PG-13, excessive, suggestive, cheap, exploitative, outrageous,
innovative, infantile, soft-hued and soft-focused, campy, voyeuristic,
trashy, sensual, highly-charged, symbolic or visually metaphoric,
carnal, highly-choreographed and artsy, prurient or soft-core
NC-17.
Border Crossings towards Pornography
Erotic films, unlike pornography, do not have as their sole purpose the explicit and graphic display of sex and nudity. Erotica sometimes is explicit, but can often be teasing, intriguing, sylized, unique and imaginative. However, trends in recent art-house films (that are unrated) suggest that simulated sex is becoming more explicit, unsimulated sex - bordering on pornographic! Although most theatrical releases are often edited to obtain an R-rating, the DVD releases include the 'director's cut', with unrated, explicit extras material.
